DESCRIPTION:
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has Dan's Excavating, Inc., under contract to construct a 'Flex Route' lane using the existing median shoulder, on-ramp metering, and variable speed advisories/travel information message boards within the project limits. The median shoulders will be reconstructed to be used as an additional lane during peak travel periods, special events, maintenance activities, and incidents/crashes. The ramp meters or ramp signals will consist of a two-section signal light (red and green only, no yellow) together with a signal controller, that will regulate the flow of traffic entering the freeway. This system is very similar to the US-23 flex route installed outside Ann Arbor. The contractor elected to replace all main-line I-96 pavement in concrete instead of asphalt.
