February 2022 - Officer Katlyn Courtney, Detective Mike Bender
Officer Katlyn Courtney
Detective Mike Bender
For your tireless efforts in bringing a child abuser to justice as well as your vigilance and commitment to protecting the youth in our city. Congratulations on your selection as the February Novi Public Safety - Employees of the Month.
Both of you were nominated by Sgt. Brian Woloski who noted that on February 11, 2022, Officer Courtney responded to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor to assist the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services with a possible child abuse investigation. Officer Courtney conducted the initial investigation and also followed-up with the DHHS Investigator; ultimately identifying twin siblings as the victims of child abuse. Detective Bender further investigated the incident and because of his hard work and meticulous attention to detail, was able to obtain a two-count child abuse first degree warrant on the offender. The offender was subsequently arrested and received a one-million-dollar bond for his egregious act.
Teamwork is essential to the mission, vision, and values of the Novi Police Department and this case is an excellent example of how talented people in different divisions of the police department can come together and advocate for children who can’t protect themselves. Your excellent teamwork and diligence on this case is a testament to your character and work ethic.
Congratulations on being named as the February 2022 Public Safety Employees of the Month
