In November 2018, Michigan voters amended the Constitution with Proposal 18-2 or the "Voters Not Politicians" ballot proposal, a constitutional amendment to "establish a commission of citizens with exclusive authority to adopt district boundaries for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress, every 10 years." Now, the Michigan constitution empowers an independent commission of citizens to draw district lines for the Michigan Legislature and Michigan's members of Congress for the 2022 election and beyond. As a result of redistricting, the City of Novi is now represented by two members of congress, two state senators, two state house representatives, and two county commissioners. Every registered voter in the City of Novi will be mailed a new Voter Information Card in May/June 2022. The information on the card lists your polling location and the new Congressional, Senate, House, and County Commissioner Districts assigned to you.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why did I get another Voter ID card?
A: All registered voters were mailed a new Voter ID card because the voting districts in Novi have changed. Please discard all previous copies of your Voter ID card and retain the new one for your records.
Q: I got my Voter ID card, but someone else in my household hasn’t received theirs.
A: Please be patient as the process of mailing the Voter ID cards may take a few weeks. If you do not receive a Voter ID card by July, please verify you are registered to vote at www.michigan.gov/vote. Once you confirm you are registered in Novi, contact the Clerk’s Office for a replacement card to be mailed.
Q: I received a Voter ID card for someone who does not live at my house, what do I do?
A: Please write “not at this address” on the card and put it back in the mail to be returned to the Clerk’s Office. Upon receipt of the returned Voter ID card, we are required to send a cancellation notice to that voter. We realize it is inconvenient to receive additional mail for the voter; however we are legally required to follow the cancellation process outlined in Michigan Election Law. Please return the pink cancellation notice the same way as the Voter ID card. We will begin the cancellation process once we receive the pink cancellation notice back, which can take up to 4 years.
Q: I received a Voter ID card for a family member who no longer lives at my house, what do I do?
A: If the family member moved within Michigan, it is best to notify them that they are still registered in Novi and need to update their registered address. They may be able to do so online: https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/RegisterVoter/Index.
If the family member moved out of state, we need a signed, written statement from the voter to cancel their voter registration. That can be mailed or emailed to the Clerk’s Office at elections@cityofnovi.org.
Q: I received a Voter ID card for someone who is deceased, what do I do?
A: Please write “deceased” on the card and put it back in the mail to be returned to the Clerk’s Office.
Q: Do I need to bring the Voter ID card with me to vote?
A: No, it is for your reference only. Every Michigan voter must comply with the identification requirement by showing picture identification or signing an affidavit attesting that he or she is not in possession of picture identification. (See MCL 168.523 for voter identification requirement.)
