In summer 2005, the Novi City Council adopted a policy resolution encouraging Novi youth to become civically active within the community as members of the Novi Youth Council. Each year the Novi City Council interviews and appoints high school students to the Youth Council. High school students who reside in Novi are eligible to be on the council.
The 21-member group is charged with making recommendations to City Council concerning the needs of children, youth, and families in the city. They research and determine the appropriate means by which public and private agencies in cooperation with volunteer efforts may address such needs. During the years, the Novi Youth Council has initiated innovative programs and partnered with the community for the betterment of Novi.
One such initiative is an all-night movie marathon,“Addicted to Movies, not Drugs,”in partnership with the Novi Police and Fire Department and Emagine Entertainment. The annual event raises money to promote drug abstinence awareness in the community. This event happens in November each year.
Connecting with older adults in the community is also an interest of the Youth Council. The “Senior to Senior” dinner/dance in partnership with a local senior community is an event where more than 100 Novi older adults are treated to a fun evening of dinner and dancing with members of the Novi Youth Council.
The council also volunteers at many events. At the City’s annual Spring Palooza, the council organizes children’s games and volunteers as youth ambassadors to the more than 3,000 visitors at the event. The Youth Council also enjoys showing off their Novi Spirit in the Memorial Day Parade and educating the middle school students at the STEM night held at Novi Meadows Elementary School. Another favorite event is volunteering at the Daddy Daughter Dance held at the Civic Center in February which allows the council to connect with more community members.
