NOVI, Mich., October 16, 2019 – The City of Novi is pleased to announce the promotion of Novi Fire Captain John Martin to Assistant Fire Chief. The Assistant Chief position had been vacant for the past 10 years due to the re-organization of the public safety executive team.

Martin began is his career in the fire service in 1997 with the Macomb Township Fire Department where he served as a firefighter and training coordinator until 2006.  It was Novi’s good fortune when he joined the Novi Fire Department as an Auxiliary Firefighter in 2003. Martin’s talents were recognized very early in his career with the Novi Fire Department when just two years after starting as an Auxiliary Firefighter he was promoted to Fire Training Lieutenant in 2005. On January 1, 2011, he was promoted to Captain where he served as a shift supervisor.

Martin is committed to being a lifelong learner, earning an Associate of Arts in Fire Science from Macomb Community College, and more recently earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Safety Administration from Eastern Michigan University in 2017.  He is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University’s Fire Staff and Command Executive Leadership Program in 2010 and has completed his Professional Emergency Management Training.  He is also a graduate of the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Services LEAD program.

“I have every confidence Assistant Chief John Martin will take our excellent, combination Fire Department to all new levels of excellence and achievement. John is a proven leader and is respected by those he serves with and our community partners,” said Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police David E. Molloy. “Fire Chief Jeff Johnson and I look forward to working with him as we enhance our public safety programs throughout the community.”
