June 2019 - Detective Steve Balog
Detective Steve Balog
I wish to extend my appreciation and congratulations to you on your nomination and selection as the Novi Public Safety Employee of the Month – June 2019. You were nominated because of your attention to detail, fact-finding skills, and relentless follow-up on an overdose death investigation.
On March 19, 2019, the Novi Police Department responded to an automated external defibrillator (AED) run for a subject who was unconscious and not breathing. Officers determined that the subject was deceased so you and Detective Wilson were called to process the scene and speak with potential witnesses. The initial investigation revealed that the deceased was provided illegal narcotics which may have been a contributing factor to his death. Over the next three months, you conducted multiple interviews as well as authoring and serving search warrants. Additionally, you spent countless hours on the phone, both on and off duty, consoling the victim’s heartbroken mother. You successfully navigated the delicate balance of keeping the emotional mother updated on the progress of the case while sympathetically helping her through the grieving process. As a result of your tireless efforts, you were able to obtain a one county Delivery of a Controlled Substance Causing Death Felony warrant from the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. This charge carries a sentence of life imprisonment or any term of years. The suspect is currently lodged at the Oakland County Jail and is awaiting trial.
Your conscientiousness, thoroughness, and persistent follow-up during this investigation, culminated in obtaining charges on the suspect and brought some closure to the family. Your diligent efforts show that the Novi Police Department will exhaust all resources to charge offenders who deliver illicit narcotics in the community. All the men and women of the Novi Police and Fire Departments congratulate you on being named Public Safety Employee of the Month – June - 2019.
