Officer Scott Woodley
The Novi Public Safety Administration would like to congratulate Officer Scott Woodley on his nomination and selection as the Novi Public Safety Employee of the Month – JUNE 2017. Officer Woodley was nominated by Sergeant Michael Warren and selected by the Implementation Committee for his calm demeanor and decisive action when handling a stressful event that undoubtedly saved a man’s life.
On June 8, 2017 at approximately 1458 hours, Officer Woodley was westbound on 10 Mile stopped for a red traffic light at Beck. While at the intersection, Officer Woodley heard a loud bang and observed a subject flying through the air as a result of a motorcycle vs passenger vehicle accident in the intersection.
Officer Woodley quickly responded to the injured motorcyclist and observed that his left leg had been traumatically amputated below his knee, and he was bleeding profusely. Officer Woodley immediately contacted dispatch to advise them of the situation and proceeded to apply his department-issued tourniquet to the patient. At that time, off-duty Fire Inspector Greg Thomas, Livonia Fire Department, stopped at the scene and came to assist in the treatment. A tourniquet was applied to the victim’s left leg and Quik-Clot was applied to a large laceration on the same leg.
Captain Martin arrived and also began treating the victim while Sergeant Warren assisted by holding him down and keeping him alert and conscious. The life-threatening external hemorrhage was eventually controlled by actions of the first responders.
The motorcyclist was then transported to Beaumont-Botsford for continued treatment. According to the surgeon, seven units of blood were needed to replenish the blood loss that initially took place at the scene. The quick reaction of those responding saved the life of this young man.
The Novi Public Safety Administration applaud Officer Woodley on handling a very stressful incident with great poise and providing emergency treatment to save a young man’s life. The full-time fire and police command officers and administrators congratulate Officer Woodley on being named Public Safety Employee of the Month - JUNE 2017.
