The Novi Public Safety Administration would like to extend their appreciation and congratulations to Officer Michael Walton on his nomination and selection as the Novi Public safety Employee of the Month – April, 2017. Officer Walton was nominated by Director of Public Safety / Chief of Police David E. Molloy and selected by the Implementation Committee for this relentless follow-up and assessment during a traffic stop.

On April 29, 2017, at approximately 9:36pm, Officer  Michael Walton conducted a traffic stop on a speeding motorist in the area  of Meadowbrook Road and Nine Mile Road. Officer Walton made contact with the driver and subsequently arrested him for driving while license suspended {DWLS).

During a search of the driver's vehicle incident to arrest, a Springfield Armory 9mm pistol was found in the glove  box.  In addition, twenty-four marijuana plants were  also located in the back seat of the vehicle.

Officer Walton, focused on relentless follow-up and  assessment, conducted an interview  of the driver who admitted he was on his way home  from Grand Rapids where  he was supposed to meet  with a potential buyer for the marijuana plants; apparently the buyer never  showed up.  The driver also admitted that the gun found  in the glove  box was his, to which he had  no concealed pistol license to legally carry it.

Officer Walton's  case was submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor for review  and the following charges were authorized:

•   Count 1 - Carry Concealed-Weapon
•   Count 2 - Controlled Substance- Delivery/Manufacture Marijuana
•   Count 3 - Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
•   Count 4 - OWLS 2nd offense

The driver was later arraigned and  was released after posting a $1 ,500.00 bond. His case is pending in the judicial system.

This case is an outstanding example of where a traffic stop and  DWLS arrest can  turn into a felony  arrest and  the removal of a deadly weapon from the street. Officer  Walton did an excellent job gleaning information from the suspect which  helped bolster his charges. It is with a great deal of pride  that Officer Michael Walton was selected as our Public Safety Employee of the Month.
