April 2015 - Officer Scott Tewes
Officer Scott Tewes
The Novi Public Safety Administration would like to extend our appreciation and congratulations to Officer Scott Tewes on his nomination and selection as the Novi Public Safety Employee of the month, April 2015. Officer Tewes was nominated and unanimously selected by the Implementation Committee for his conscientious and compassionate efforts to assist a motorist from Japan after he was involved in a personal injury accident.
On April 21st, Officer Tewes and Officer Kulikowski were dispatched to a single car crash at 13 Mile and M-5. Upon arrival, Officer Tewes found the car had run off the road and was not visible from the street. Searching for the car, Officer Tewes climbed a fence and traversed two large hills before discovering the car stuck in a pond. Officer Tewes found the vehicle partially under water in the middle of the pond. As he approached the driver he quickly realized the driver was in need of medical assistance, however English was not his first language and he could only communicate in Japanese. It was obvious to Officer Tewes that the Language Line needed to be utilized in order to ascertain his injuries and also find out if anyone else was initially in the vehicle but ejected during the accident. With assistance from the interpreter, Officer Tewes were able to determine the Japanese citizen had a history of seizures and likely suffered another seizure, which caused the accident. The Novi Fire Department and CEMS medical personnel arrived on scene and you stayed to help assess the situation.
Officer Tewes swift thinking, intuitive decision making and fast reactions assisted a visitor from a foreign country in obtaining immediate medical assistance. One of Officer Tewes co-workers applauded him by saying “I am lucky to work with Scott Tewes at the Novi Police Department and to have him as a member of our team.” Because of his efforts it is with great pride that the Novi Public Safety Administration join the other members of the Novi Public Safety Team, and the Novi Community in recognizing Officer Scott Tewes outstanding work.
