NEW – Family Health Institute – Childhood Weight Management Program

This is a nine-topic weight management program is designed for children ages 5-14 and their families. The program is intended to increase awareness of eating habits and create healthy lifestyle changes. There are no diets, pills or special foods to buy. Old behaviors will soon be replaced with new healthy habits. By practicing the C.A.N.D.E.E. Principles, children learn to feel good about their bodies and control their weight. The behavioral education program meets once per week and is followed by a weekly maintenance program. Parents and children learn about nutrition (healthy eating), exercise (fitness fun) and self esteem (building a positive self-imagine). The children are taught in a relaxed classroom setting and participate in exercise (organized play) in a room. Parents are instructed in a separate classroom. The Program is designed and facilitated by Keith Levick, Ph.D, and Paul Ehrmann, DO. Combind, Drs. Ehrmann and Levick have more than 20 years of experience treating overweight children and families.

Food for Life Cooking & Nutrition Classes

Wondering what’s for dinner? Food for Life cooking and nutrition classes, offered by the Providence Center for the Healing Arts, in an educational alliance with The Cancer Project in Washington D.C., presents a way for anyone to make healthy and simple recipes. Classes educate students on how to make confident food choices and how to prepare nutritious and delicious plant based meals. Participants learn about food topics such as maintaining a healthy weight, planning healthy
meals, replacing meat, discovering dairy alternatives, favoring fiber, and immune boosting foods. All are welcome. Take a class, bring a friend. Family Self Defense Center

Family Self Defense Center has been providing instruction in Isshinryu Karate since 1992. Chosen
as one of the “Top Five Isshinryu Dojos in the Country” by the Karate Hall of Fame Board in 2002 and 2009, F.S.D.C., promotes a “family friendly” atmosphere for the study of traditional Isshinryu karate and Okinawan weaponry. Founders of the school, Mr. Z, a 4th degree Black Belt, has been teaching for over 25 years and Ms. Chris, a 3rd degree Black Belt, has been instructing for over 15 years. Both have been certified by the world renowned Cooper Institute and were chosen “Top Contributors” nationally for their instruction of Isshinryu Karate three times each. The school also boasts many National Champion students who also serve as Teaching Assistants.

Martial Arts for Everyone

Martial ArtsIsshinryu Karate is a realistic, practical style of martial arts originating in Okinawa. Age appropriate drills and games are utilized to promote the learning of simple self defense and “stranger danger” techniques in an encouraging and fun environment. Classes build self esteem, confidence, increase focus and respect while promoting scholastic achievement. Qualifying students will test for belt rank and merit patches at the end of the 8 class session. Additional Information: Wear comfortable clothing. There will be a charge of $10-$20, depending on rank, paid to the instructor at the end of the session for those testing to the next belt rank. There are no make-up classes. No classes Jan 18, Feb 15 and Apr 5.

NEW – Sport Sword – Padded Weapons Training

Guard Up! Learn the fun of wielding a Japanese sword and other traditional martial arts weapons without the danger. The padded weapons program teaches eye-hand coordination, discipline and respect, while training like the Samurai of Old, using a modern, encouraging environment. Learn short, long and double sword, Bo staff, knife and Nunchukas all utilizing safe, padded weaponry. As you advance, you will be able to test your new found skills against other classmates. Additional Information: There will be no class on Apr 5. Sword and Head Gear must be purchased from the Instructor for $50 the first night of class which will be used throughout your training. NEW – Twirl M’s 4 Time National Twirling Championship Team

Twirl-M’s of Walled Lake, MI, focuses on teaching recreation and competitive twirl programs. The Twirl-M’s features national winners, regional and state champions, as well as four team champions including: 2008/2009 NBTA Majorette Dance Twirl Champions, 2008 TU International Production Halftime Grand Champion and the 2007 NBTA Juvenile Beginner National Dance Twirl Champions. Fit Academy is a progressive seven-week fitness program that meets twice a week. Classes feature a warm-up, structured strength and cardio activity and a cool down to build fitness and self-esteem. Volunteer Coaches Needed

Travel Soccer League

Girl playing soccerThe travel soccer division is governed by WSSL (Western Suburban Soccer League). Roster limitations, registration dates, league fees, rules and player ages are determined by WSSL. Try-outs are not allowed per WSSL Recreation League rules. At the discretion of the parents, participants may play in an older division. At the U10 and higher divisions a coach will register a full team. Practice nights and times are at the discretion of the volunteer coach. The team will travel to local communities for weekday and weekend games. Individuals who register separately will be placed on a team, if space is available. However, if we are unable to place your child, you will receive a full refund. Players will receive a shirt, shorts, socks and award. Additional Information: U10-U12 will use a size 4 soccer ball. U13 and up will use a size 5 soccer ball. Covered shin guards are mandatory. Please check the WSSL web site, www.wsslsoccer.org, for more information. Practices are scheduled to begin the week of April 5 and the season will end the week of June 12 tentatively.

Get active this spring in our exciting soccer league! This instructional soccer program is designed for participants to learn rules, game strategies and team tactics. LAX CATS – Novi ’s Newest Lacrosse Program

Get your child involved in the fastest game on two feet! Players will learn everything from basic skills to offensive-defensive strategies while competing in a 10 game schedule as well as two tournaments. Practices will be 2-3 times per week along with game play after the first month. Games will be played at surrounding communities and tournaments are held in Bloomfield Hills and Lansing. Rosters will be limited to 25 players. Registration price does not include practice or game uniforms and officiating fees. It does include tournament entry fees. Additional Information: Lacrosse is a contact sport and one must consider this when signing up. It is the intention of the coaching staff to teach the proper techniques to promote safety. Players must provide their own equipment: lacrosse helmet, gloves, elbow pads, shoulder pads, cup, mouth guard and stick. A $75 fee, payable to the coach, for full uniforms (home and away) and a practice jersey will be due at the first practice.

T-Ball , Coach Pitch & Girls Fast Pitch Softball

The program is designed to help young players learn game rules, game strategies and teamwork; in addition to promoting a healthy, active lifestyle from an early age. Your child will learn the fundamentals of baseball; including base running, hitting and throwing. All players will randomly be assigned a team based on requested practice night. Practice night and times are at the discretion of the volunteer coach. We will have practices for the first two weeks. The rest of the season we will have two games per week on a weeknight evening. The season will begin mid June and end the first week of August pending make up games. A T-shirt and award are included in the fee. Additional Information: Each participant must bring a glove and a 2 1/4” diameter barrel bat. We will provide helmets with cages. If you bring your own helmet, it must have a cage attached. Participants will use a 9” Safety Ball. Grades 3-6 girls’ fast pitch will use an 11” softball. Grades 7-9 girls’ fast pitch will travel to local communities for weekly games, and a t-shirt and award are included in the fee. A regulation softball will be used. Please register your child for the grade they will be enrolled in for the 2010-2011 school year.

NEW – Michigan’s National Park: Isle Royale

Although the National Park Service oversees 391 units, including National Lakeshores, Monuments and Scenic Trails, only 58 of these sites are designated National Parks. Isle Royale National Park shares the same label as the Grand Canyon and Yellow Stone, making it Michigan’s only National Park. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, Isle Royale’s physical isolation and primitive wilderness has become the Island’s main attraction. It is also the home of the world’s longest continuous predator-prey study between the wolves and moose that live there. This program has been put together by a naturalist who has visited the island twice and will share her experiences. This dynamic workout is FUN and EASY TO DO! Routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and International zest into the mix and you’ve got ZUMBA! Wear loose clothing and a dance type sneaker. However, cross-trainers work as well. Adult and Child Heartsaver CPR

Have you ever wanted to learn how to save a life? The Novi Fire Department can show you how. This is an American Heart Association course which covers CPR and choking emergencies for adults and children. The course is approximately 3.5 hours in length and taught by Novi Firefighters certified in CPR instruction. Students will receive a two year certification card upon successful completion of the course. Additional Information: Dress in comfortable clothing. Text book is included. You can register by clicking here. (There is no fee for City of Novi Residents. Proof of residency is required prior to the start of the course.) Classes for residents offered the first Wednesday, and for non-residents the second Wednesday of the month. There are no refunds or transfer of funds for this course. There is a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 students in order to hold the course.

This class is appropriate for dental/doctor’s offices and many other healthcare professionals. This class is designed for businesses that are in need of training their staff in Basic Life Support. Class is approximately 4 hours in length and taught by Novi Firefighters certified in Basic Life Support CPR instruction. Students will receive an American Heart Association certification card valid for two years upon completion of the course. Additional Information: Text books are included. Fire Extinguisher Training for Business

Is your company in need of Fire Extinguisher training? Becoming familiar with fire extinguishers and their use in the workplace makes good sense. Fire extinguishers can be used to put out small fires before they spread, which may prevent injury or loss of life, and can save jobs as well as lives. They can assist in preventing temporary loss of production by putting out fires that cause extensive damage and destruction in the workplace. This class is designed to train up to fifteen of your personnel at one time. The training is provided by Novi Firefighters. Additional Information: Dress for the weather-part of the class is conducted outside. There is no refund or transfer of funds for this course. The course if offered the first Friday of the month. Citizens Police Academy

The Lakes Area Citizen’s Police Academy is a 10 week program that meets once a week. It is open to residents of Novi / Walled Lake / South Lyon / Wolverine Lake / Wixom as all of those police departments participate. Each week a different topic is discussed and or demonstrated. Topics range from a trip to the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office to actually shooting at the Novi Gun Range. Other topics include Narcotics / crime scene processing / use of force and more.

CERT – Community Emergency Response Teams

CERT is a concept developed in 1985 by the Los Angeles Fire Department. They recognized that citizens would very likely be on their own during the first few hours after a catastrophic disaster. The LAFD created CERT to help provide vital services in the absence of emergency responders. Today, more than 38 states and several foreign countries have instituted the CERT program in their local communities. CERT training consists of 24 hours of instruction over an eight-week period. Classes are taught by emergency responders, including law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical personnel from Novi. The role of a CERT volunteer includes:

• Search for lost of kidnapped children
• Staff emergency operations centers and monitor events
• Emergency operations center security
• Manage volunteers
• Assist Red Cross and other relief organizations

Its contagious, fun and a great workout! Just drop in at the Northville Community Senior Center and pay your $2 each week. Players play on a weekly basis, determined day, time and location based on availability; therefore a firm commitment is needed from you, the participant. A league banquet at the end of the season is included in the registration price. The Tennis Committee will assign players in the proper leagues to provide consistent/equal play for all participants. Spring Softball Leagues -Adult

The Novi Spring/Summer Adult Softball Leagues are available for recreational and competitive teams. All leagues include 14 regular season games and an end of the season tournament for the top four teams in each division. The newly renovated Ella Mae Power Park (host of the 2007 ASA State “C” Coed Tournament, 2007 ISA Senior Worlds, 2009 State JO Championships and the 2010 ASA 18A Northern National) provides participants with optimal playing conditions at any competition level. The park features new fencing, red clay infields, irrigated outfields, a new MUSCO lighting system and concession building, plenty of parking and play structures for kids! Register as a competitive team, recreational team or call the parks office to at 248.347.0400 to sign up as an individual. Additional Information: Umpire fees per game are $20 (per team) for a 2-man system. A manager’s meeting will be held Wednesday, April 14 at the Novi Civic Center: Men’s Leagues 6:30pm, Coed 7:15pm.

Learn to Skate

The Learn to Skate program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Figure Skating program. Lessons are given by highly qualified professional skating instructors. All classes are 30 minutes with an additional 30 minutes of practice, and enrolled skaters will receive a free public skate pass to use throughout the entire Learn to Skate session.

Skating Club of Novi

Close up of ice skatesEstablished in 1998 with 25 members, the Skating Club of Novi is a volunteer organization that has been a member of the United States Figure Skating Association since 1999. Since then, the club has grown to almost 150 members. The club is dedicated to the promotion of figure skating, and supports many activities at the Novi Ice Arena to further this goal. The Skating Club hosts the Annual Ice Show in early spring that showcases the talents of our Learn to Skate students as well as our recreational and competitive figure skaters. Our coaching staff is for all levels of skaters, from beginner to competitive; individual freestyle and dance. Fall/winter freestyle ice is available six days per week (Monday-Friday mornings and afternoons, and Saturday mornings). Please call the rink for times and levels.

Novi Youth Hockey Association

Novi Ice Arena is home to the Novi Youth Hockey Association. The NYHA is a non-profit, volunteer lead organization committed to cultivating and developing youths in the sport of ice hockey. Both house and travel teams are offered to support players ranging from ages 4-18. 500+ players are active in the Novi house program with another 130+ travel players, making it one of the largest in Michigan and the USA. Over the years, NYHA teams have won state and district championships with many tournament wins in tow. The hockey season runs from early August (travel)/late August (house) through March. The house (beginning with the Squirt division) and travel teams participate within the Little Caesars amateur Hockey League (LCAHL), the nation’s largest amateur youth hockey league. Mini-Mite and Mite house players compete against local teams. The Association also offers “Learn to Play Hockey” programs and we are still accepting enrollments. High School Hockey

Novi Ice Arena is the home of the Novi High School Wildcats and the Northville High School Mustangs. The Novi Ice Arena and Novi and Northville High Schools will be hosting games for the State Playoffs. Games begin March 1, 2010. Novi was also awarded the State Quarterfinals, which take place March 9, 2010.
