Community members invited to participate in CERT Training

NOVI, Mich., December 7, 2011 – Novi community members are invited to become trained Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members. The CERT program is designed to support the local response capability with training to organize themselves and other volunteers at a disaster site, to provide immediate assistance to victims and to collect information to support responders’ efforts when they arrive. CERT members may search for lost children, staff emergency centers, secure emergency operations centers, provide minor first aid, assist in light search and rescue, and aid the Red Cross and other relief organizations.
“The Community Emergency Response Team is an invaluable, free
program for our community that enhances the cooperation between
the Novi Fire and Police Departments and citizens through
education and training,” said Novi’s Director of Public Safety /
Chief of Police David Molloy. “Since inception, we have trained
and graduated more than 200 CERT volunteers. These men and women
are a valuable addition to our emergency support capabilities.”
The City of Novi will begin a new eight-week training session on Monday, January 9, 2012. Novi residents 18 years of age and over with a valid driver's license may apply. The training session consists of 24 hours of instruction on topics that include disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster psychology.
