FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Novi, MI, July 1, 2008 – Drunk driving is one of America’s
deadliest crimes. During 2006, nearly 27% of all drivers involved in
traffic related crashes across the United States over the Fourth of
July holiday possessed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or
higher. In fact, there were 659 traffic related fatalities over this
same holiday weekend. Out of the 659 traffic fatalities, 37%
involved a driver or motorcyclist with a BAC of .08 or higher.
That
is why the Novi Police Department is joining forces with hundreds of
other law enforcement agencies across Michigan during the Fourth of
July holiday to launch an aggressive new crackdown on impaired
drivers called “Over the Limit. Under Arrest.”
Extra officers will be out in force to look for and arrest drunk
drivers during the statewide campaign, which runs from now through
July 7, 2008. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP)
is coordinating the enforcement effort by providing federal traffic
safety funds for overtime enforcement to agencies to boost patrols
in selected areas and by funding paid advertising to ensure
widespread awareness of the crackdown. Officers from more than 500
agencies across the state have agreed to participate in the
campaign.
“Alcohol is often part of picnics or parties during the summer
holidays,” notes David Molloy, Novi’s Chief of Police. “Motorists
need to keep in mind that alcohol and driving never mix and if they
are over the limit they will be under arrest. Don’t get behind the
wheel of a vehicle if you’ve been drinking, even if you plan to only
drive a short distance. When you drink and drive, you put yourself,
your passengers and everyone else on the road at risk.”
The Traffic Improvement Association of Oakland County (TIA) is
the lead agency in Oakland County for this crackdown. Novi Police,
along with agencies from Milford, Pontiac, White Lake Township,
Bloomfield Township, West Bloomfield, Troy, Royal Oak, Auburn Hills,
Waterford, Southfield, Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and the
Michigan State Police will participate in the “Over the Limit. Under
Arrest” initiative across Oakland County in an effort to ensure
drunk drivers are located and arrested.
