FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOVI, Michigan, April 22, 2008 – On Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 3:00pm, the City of Novi Youth Council will partner with the Novi Police Department to participate in Project Stick Shock canvassing Novi retailers who sell alcohol with more than 6,000 stickers on multi-packs of alcoholic beverages warning purchasers of the dangers of contributing to underage drinking.

This the third year the Youth Council and the Police Department have undertaken Project Sticker Shock, strategically targeting dates before homecoming, graduation and prom each school year.

Youth Council members placing stickers on alcoholic beverages.“Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking,” said David Molloy, Novi’s Chief of Police. “Project Stick Shock is a wonderful partnership between the men and women of the Novi Police Department, the Novi Youth Council, and community businesses to deter underage drinking, which is extremely prevalent during prom and graduation season.”

Project Sticker Shock is one of several existing partnerships between the Police Department and the Novi Youth Council. Initiatives such as “Addicted to Movies...Not Drugs,” and “Addicted to Games...Not Drugs,” in partnership with local businesses, raise funds for charities and feature drug education materials and the opportunity for students to create anti-drug public service announcements which air on local cable television.
