FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NOVI, Mich., February 12, 2008 – On February 7th, the City of
Novi Police Department was honored with two distinctive awards in
Traffic Safety from the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP),
the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) and AAA
Michigan. The Novi Police Department was the only department to earn
a pair of accolades.
The Novi Police Department was honored with the 2007 Award for
Excellence in Commercial Vehicle Safety for the first time and, for
the third consecutive year, received the 2007 Award for Excellence
in Traffic Safety for agencies with 50-80 officers. Having earned
these awards, the Novi Police Department automatically will be
submitted to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)
to compete for the same recognition internationally.
The Award for Excellence in Commercial Vehicle Safety recognizes
Michigan police agencies across the state with 36+ officers who
conduct comprehensive commercial vehicle safety efforts throughout
their respective jurisdiction. The Novi Police Department was
selected as a result of a community policing project developed to
address overweight commercial motor vehicles that travel along Beck
Road from Eight Mile Road to I-96.
Winners of the MACP/OHSP/AAA Michigan Traffic Safety Award must
demonstrate a clear and convincing commitment to traffic safety
within their communities. Programs are judged on four components:
Scope and duration of the project
Complexity or difficulty of the project
Degree of innovation involved
Results achieved
Increased Police visibility at community events allowed the Novi
Police Department to reduce injury crashes by 77 and property damage
crashes by 271. Increased seat belt usage was observed and the City
only experienced one traffic fatality and speed or alcohol were not
a factor in this crash.
"In 2006, we learned from the National Citizens Survey that
Traffic Safety ranked in the 89th percentile (above the norm) from
community members evaluating the quality of Novi’s Public Safety
Services. This award amplifies the survey results," commented David
E. Molloy, Novi’s Chief of Police. "I commend the dedication of the
men and women of our Police Department for their continued
commitment to achieving such excellence."
