FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOVI, Michigan, Feb 11, 2008 – The Novi Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has partnered with Girls on the Run International to bring this unique, life-changing after-school program for pre-teen girls to Novi. The program, designed to empower young girls with the groundwork for life-long healthy living habits, greater self-awareness, and a sense of achievement, is offered to girls in grades three through five.

The program includes training sessions twice a week for a 5K running event while providing enhancing and uplifting workouts. The price is $130 per person for residents who take advantage of online registration. Registration includes daily snacks, t-shirt, water bottle, a discount on New Balance running shoes and entry into a 5K race. The session begins March 31, 2008 and continues for ten weeks.

Based out of Charlotte, N.C., the Girls on the Run International program is designed to promote good health, friendship, positive body image and self-esteem by helping pre-teen girls while they deal with issues including society, peers, and parents. The program has helped more than 40,000 girls gain a stronger sense of self as they enter adolescence.

Volunteer Coaches are also needed. Coaches attend a one time training session and are provided with detailed lesson plans and supporting materials. Coaches do not have to be a runner, only enthusiastic and committed to the healthy development of young girls.

"The great thing about this program is that you don’t need to be an athlete or runner to be a part of it.  The program is really all about teaching young girls to be strong and healthy individuals - physically, emotionally and mentally," comments Novi Parks Superintendent of Recreation

Nancy Cowan. "It also provides adults with an opportunity to give back to the community and be a strong role model for youth by volunteering to coach."

The program will take place at four schools in Novi and culminate in a 5K run on Saturday, June 7. For more information or to register call the Novi Parks Department at 248-347-0400. To learn more about Girls on the Run International visit their website.
