Before a patrol officer recruit can work as a police officer, the candidate must complete an intense training program with one of the police academies throughout the state of Michigan. After completing the police academy and being hired as a police officer, a patrol officer completes several months of training within the police department. During this in house training program, an officer is assigned to work with a Field Training Officer (FTO). The FTO trains the new officer in the daily operations and policies of the police department. A patrol officer is considered "on probation" for a year after the completion of the Field Training Program. During this year, the new officer receives other necessary training and is periodically evaluated by patrol supervisors. All training a candidate receives is administered within the regulations set by the Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
