Starting a fitness program may be one of the best things you can do for your health. Physical activity can improve bone and heart health, improve balance and coordination, develop muscle strength, and assist with weight loss.

The Novi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department offers a variety of fitness classes from lowimpact workouts that help strengthen and tone muscles to high-impact aerobics which helps burn fat and calories. Classes are available morning, evenings and weekends and our professional instructors will help guide you to a healthier you.

Fitness Tip of the Season:
Autumn is a season of change. It is the perfect time to fall into good habits to help you stay physically active during the holiday season. Joining a group fitness class can help you reach your fitness goals, improve your balance & stability and help you relieve stress.

Improve your stamina, strength and flexibility with our Stretch and Strength class! All exercises are adaptable so you can work at your own pace while doing low-impact aerobics and strength training. Classes run continuously except on scheduled holidays and instructor vacation. Bring hand-held weights if you have them and a water bottle. Wear tennis shoes and loose, comfortable clothing. Level 4 Interval Cardio Workout

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves alternating between very intense bouts of exercise and low intensity exercise. HIIT can be used both anaerobically (in the gym with weights) and aerobically with cardio. Not only do you burn more calories during a HIIT workout, but you’ll continue to burn calories long after and your body will feel energized.

Looking to tone up, gain muscle strength and increase flexibility? Then this class is for you! We can achieve these goals through the use of exercise resistance training. All activities are challenge by choice. Most exercises are done seated in a chair, so this class is especially accommodating for those with bad knees, hips or other limitations. Tai Chi, sometimes referred to as “meditation in motion,” is an ancient Chinese martial art consisting of a sequence of slow, graceful motions that relax and strengthen the mind, body, and spirit. Wu Style is a family art with a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Our instructor has taught locally at the Botsford Center for Health Improvement and University of Michigan-Dearborn. Tai Chi is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation. Participants learn at their own pace, no experience is needed. Class is intended for the more active adult.

Power Plate machines give the body’s muscles a high-speed workout by using vibrations to stimulate them to contract and relax. Family Self Defense Center (FSDC) has provided instruction in Isshinryu Karate since 1992 and has been named a “Top Five Isshinryu Dojo in the Country” by the Karate Hall of Fame for 11 years. FSDC promotes a “family-friendly” atmosphere for the study of traditional Isshinryu Karate and Sport Weaponry. Founders of the school, Mr. Z, 8th, and Ms. Chris, 7th, degree Black Belt Master Instructors, have been instructing for over 40 years. Both were chosen “Top Contributors” nationally for their instruction of Isshinryu Karate,as well as “National Instructors of the Year” countless times. This two-hour, hands-on introductory class gives a wide view of working around horses. You’ll learn to groom, saddle and do mounted and un- mounted activities. Introduction to horses is a great adventure for family members of all ages to do together.
The mini-clinic is a great way to decide if you would like to take riding lessons. Students ages 6-8 must be accompanied by an adult. (No cost for adult.) All participants must have a signed Wildwind Liability Form, no exception.

Senior Horseback Riding Lessons

Whether you’ve never ridden a horse before or you’re a seasoned pro, we will get you moving with the horses in an English riding lesson. Meticulous Basketball Beginner Skills Training

Meticulous Basketball provides a simple yet developmental curriculum to help novice players learn basketball skill. Athletes will learn how to dribble, pass, and shoot in a non-competitive training environment. The training session will focus on form rather than results to encourage success through trial and error. Despite a low intensity approach to skill development, athletes will still be expected to give their best effort and attitude. The words “I can’t” will not be tolerated. The “Take Your First Shot” skill workouts are perfect for the athlete who is developing interest in the game of basketball.

Meticulous Basketball Intermediate Skills Training

The Meticulous Basketball Intermediate skill sessions are an intense yet comprehensive program designed to heighten fundamental skill. Athletes will develop the five pillars of basketball skill: dribbling, passing, shooting, moving without the ball, and catching. The training session will focus on form and speed. Sessions will include multiple breaks to encourage high effort during drills. The intermediate workouts will also include some competitive drills to measure skill under pressure. The intermediate workouts will benefit any basketball player participating in organized play.

Instructor: Meticulous Basketball is led by Marv Fox Jr. who played 4 years for Concordia University and was a part of the men’s basketball coaching staff.

Fall House Basketball Leagues

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, you better bring your “A” game. Players are placed on teams, receive uniforms, and play games against teams in their division.

Season: Practices begin the week of October 15. Season consists of weekly practices on weeknights and at least seven games. Most games will be played on Saturdays with a possibility of midweek games.

Coach Information: We need volunteer coaches! If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, please indicate so during the registration process. Coaches will receive $25 credit to their account for future use in any Novi Parks program. Coaching credits will stay on your profile for two years.

Leisure Unlimited Youth Basketball Clinic

Coach Amy Kilgore played at the University of Michigan, where she was named an NCAA Regional All-American and M-Women’s Female Athlete of the Year during her senior year. Currently, she coaches the Novi Varsity Field Hockey Team with her husband Kevin and she has a passion for mentoring young women and developing their field hockey skills! If you already have a field hockey stick, bring it with you. If not, we have one for you to borrow! Minimal equipment required including mouth guard, shin guards, and a water bottle.

Tumble Bunnies comes to you and brings a variety of equipment such as balance beams, bars, trampolines, wedge mats, octagons, vault, ladders and so much more. We have every piece of equipment imaginable. Our classes are jam packed with activities that include a new warm up, across the floor activities, movement to music, and an outrageously fun obstacle course. Several small props are brought in to ensure the fun such as hoops, beanbags, ribbons, balls, scarves, cones, ropes, etc. Each child takes home a paper explaining to parents what we did that day. Each child will be introduced to and learn cartwheels, handstands, bridges, flips and a variety of skills on many different pieces of equipment. Comfortable clothing required.

This program improves self-confidence, voice control, rhythm, posture, and overall coordination. Come be a part of one of the largest Learn to Skate programs in the country! Our program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Basic Skills program. Lessons are given by highly qualified professional skating instructors. All classes consist of 30 minutes of instruction with an additional 30 minutes of practice time. Novi Youth Hockey Association

Novi Ice Arena is home to the Novi Youth Hockey Association. The NYHA is a non-profit, volunteer lead organization committed to cultivating and developing youths in the sport of ice hockey. Both house and travel teams are offered to support players ranging from ages 4-18. There are more than 500 players and coaches registered with the NYHA, making it one of the largest in Michigan and the USA. Over the years, NYHA teams have won state and district championships, along with numerous tournament wins. The hockey season runs from early August (travel)/late August (house) through March. The house teams (beginning with the Squirt division) and the travel teams participate within the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League (LCAHL), the nation’s largest amateur youth hockey league. High School Hockey

Novi Ice Arena is the home of the Novi High School Wildcats and the Northville High School Mustangs varsity hockey teams. We are also the home for the Northville Prep and Girls teams. We host many high school hockey games and events each year.

SKATING CLUB OF NOVI

Established in 1998 with 25 members, the Skating Club of Novi is a volunteer organization that has been a member of the United States Figure Skating Association since 1999. Since then, the club has grown to over 150 members. The club is dedicated to the promotion of figure skating, and supports many activities at the Novi Ice Arena to further this goal. The Skating Club hosts the Annual Ice Show in the early spring that showcases the talents of our Learn to Skate students as well as our recreational and competitive figure skaters. Our coaching staff is for all levels of skaters, from beginner to competitive; individual freestyle and dance. In December, the Skating Club of Novi hosts their annual Holiday Exhibition. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. Freestyle ice is available six days per week (Monday-Friday mornings and afternoons, and Saturday mornings).
