It’s time to make time for you! Not only does exercise create better physical health, it balances mind and spirit leading to an overall great life. Better health starts with one step and that step is making the commitment. The Novi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department offers a variety of fi tness classes that vary from high impact aerobics to gentle strength building. Classes are available morning and evening to meet your schedule. Our professional instructors guide you along the way to a better you.

FITNESS ABILITY ICONS

Level 1 Fitness Ability
Level 1 – Low impact and light cardio. Class is challenge by choice with ability accommodations.

Outdoor fitness equipment has been growing in popularity in recent years as the benefits of outdoor exercise have been recognized to improve psychological and physiological health, prevent disease, decrease tension and depression, and increase energy. Novi residents are encouraged to check out the outdoor exercise equipment on the Meadowbrook Commons Campus, along the walking path between the gazebo  and Holy Family Church. The four stations serve multiple fitness functions: Instructions are posted on each unit.

Improve your stamina, strength, and flexibility through this program! This Barre inspired class uses the principles of low weights & high reps. This class will sculpt your abs, arms, thighs and glutes using weights and other props such as tubing, balls and a chair. Build lean muscle mass in all the major muscles of the body and improve bone density with the use of hand held weights and resistance bands. Looking for improved circulation, strength, pain relief, range of motion, increased energy levels, alertness, and an active way to keep your body moving - this class is for you! We can achieve these goals through the use of exercise balls and bands. All activities are challenge by choice. Most exercises are done seated in a chair, so this class is especially accommodating for those with bad knees, hips, or other limitations. Tai Chi, sometimes referred to as “meditation in motion,” is an ancient Chinese martial art consisting of a sequence of slow, graceful motions that relax and strengthen the mind, body, and spirit. Wu Style is a family art with a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Our instructor has taught locally at the Botsford Center for Health Improvement and University of Michigan-Dearborn. Come inspire your mind, body and breath as you glance out towards Walled Lake. During the class, we will move through a series of dynamic and static yoga postures that are intelligently sequenced to increase strength, flexibility and balance, while decreasing stress. Your instructor will help you establish proper form and explore modifications so you can be sure to feel challenged and safe in each posture. Pitch, Hit & Run™ is the official youth skills competition of Major League Baseball ®. This FREE competition at Ella Mae Power Park is an opportunity for young baseball and softball players to prove their ability to pitch, hit and run among the best in their age group. This is your chance to advance through three rounds of competition and compete in the National Finals on an all expense paid trip to the MLB All-Star Game in Miami, Florida. Finalists will compete on-field prior to shagging fly balls during the Home Run Derby and attend the All-Star Game. The road to Miami starts here!

Get your child involved in America’s pastime this summer! In these leagues, players will learn the fundamentals and basic rule comprehension of the sport. Beginner and experienced players are welcome. A jersey, hat/visor, and participation award will be included. Players will need to provide their own glove and pants/shorts. Other basic equipment will be provided at the fields. Please register your child for the grade they will be enrolled in for the 2017-2018 school year.

NFL Flag Football

Experience the Difference – Presented by: National Flag Football Are you ready for some football? Join the largest youth flag football organization in the country. This is a 5v5, non-contact, recreational, co-ed format. Teams are limited to 10 players to maximize playing time. This is an exceptional program for first time players who want to learn the fundamentals of football. This is also a wonderful opportunity for players who may want to continue to enhance their skills before taking the next leap into tackle football. Games are played at ITC Community Sports Park and Northville Community Park on Sunday afternoons. Practices take place one hour prior to game time each week to ensure a convenient and fun experience for all. Participants will receive an NFL reversible jersey, flag belt and individual participation award. Games are officiated by MHSAA referees. There are no try-outs! Everyone participates! Children are placed on teams according to their school and grade to ensure classmates are playing together.

Lacrosse Player Development

Boys’ Lacrosse Developmental League

This seven-week league runs one day per week throughout the summer and focuses on player development. Coach Nick Diegel, former D1 NCAA lacrosse player, will be conducting all the player development and lacrosse instruction. You’ll be learning from one of the best lacrosse instructors in the Midwest! The first 30 minutes of each session will be instruction and skill development, followed by an hour of scrimmages and games. Skill development will include: offense, defense, dodging, shooting, passing, ground balls, and many other skills. Lacrosse campers will be required to provide their own equipment, including lacrosse helmet and stick. Other equipment is recommended, but not required. All Lax players will be provided a reversible jersey/pinnie, helmet sticker, water bottle, and car sticker. No session Jul 3.

Tiny Tikes Soccer 3-Year-Old League

Join Tiny Tikes Soccer for three year old kids! Participants will play in four practices/games. Sessions will take place in a 45-minute time slot and games are in a 4v4 format. Jerseys and awards are included in the registration fee. Players must be three years old at the start of the league. A parent for every child is expected to help during each session and they will be allowed on the field to help the players. The practice plan and game rules will be provided to all parents. Volunteer coaches are needed!

Fall House Soccer League

This instructional soccer league will focus on developing the basic fundamentals while providing a supportive and fun environment. Practices take place once during the week with games generally occurring on Saturdays; however, there may be some weekday games. When registering, please indicate at least two preferred practice nights. This does not guarantee that you will have practice on one of those nights, as schedules are made based on the availability of the volunteer coaches. Covered shin guards are mandatory for all participants and jewelry, including earrings, will not be allowed. Volunteer coaches are needed! If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, please indicate so during the registration process. Coaches will receive $25 credit to their account for future use in any Novi Parks program.

Fall WSSL Recreational Travel Soccer – NPSC Thunder

The REC travel soccer league is governed by WSSL (Western Suburban Soccer League). There are no tryouts for REC division teams, and they are formed provided we have a volunteer coach and enough players interested. Teams play clubs from surrounding communities at home and away locations on weekends and weekday evenings. Teams will practice twice during the week. Players will receive a full uniform including a home and away jersey, shorts, and socks. Covered shin guards are mandatory for all participants and jewelry, including earrings, will not be allowed. Volunteer coaches are needed! If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, please indicate so during the registration process. Coaches will receive $25 credit to their account for future use in any Novi Parks program.

The league will feature a competitive atmosphere and a perfect opportunity for friends to play basketball. Teams supply jerseys. Individuals will be placed on teams and have the option to utilize Novi Parks jerseys (if enough people to create a team) or supply their own. Season includes seven nights of doubleheaders, 25 minute time limit, and officials to oversee the contest. The top two teams will play the eighth week for a shot at the championship!

CRICKET

DFC Novi Cricket Cup

Compete and socialize with cricket enthusiasts! The 7th annual DFC Novi Cricket Cup will be held at the beautiful Ella Mae Power Park. Tournament will be limited to the first 16 teams and modified ‘T-ball’ cricket rules will apply. Team rosters will be due at the managers meeting on August 14. Tournament schedule will be sent out via the DFC Committee following the managers meeting. The tournament will start Saturday, August 19 with pool play concluding Sunday, August 20. The semi-finals and finals will take place Saturday, August 26. Some teams will have the opportunity to play under the lights.

Participants must be at least age 55 or over. Divisions: Men’s Monday, Women’s Wednesday and Mixed Thursday. Golf cart fee of $5 is paid directly to the golf course and is based on two people sharing a cart. All leagues will consist of partners playing a round-robin schedule. Scoring is based on individual scores for all leagues. Returning players will begin with the previous seasons handicap plus two strokes. One single payment is required that includes the registration, scoring, greens fees and all Golf Outing/Banquet fees (except the required $5 golf outing cart fee for Riverbank members and nonmembers based on two individuals sharing a cart). Additional Information: All golfers are expected to attend the league orientation meeting on Tuesday, April 18 at 10am. This meeting will be held at the Novi Civic Center. No golf on May 29 and July 3.

X-Golf

X-Golf is the most innovative and accurate golf simulator experience in the world, and they have partnered with the City of Novi to offer a fun opportunity in the fall. During league play, each team will play head-to-head against another team each week. The top handicap player for Team 1 will play against top handicap player for Team 2 in a stroke play match. The second best handicap players for each team will play against each other in a stroke play match as well. Weekly points are earned for how many stroke play matches are won per team. The initial team registration is at cityofnovi. org, and then each player will pay $15 at the course each week.

The Novi and Northville Parks and Recreation Departments will be offering another summer of softball for 2017. Games will be played on Tuesday mornings May through August in Novi and Northville. Participants must turn 55 years old or older during the calendar year of 2017, men and women are welcome. Registration will be taken on a team basis. American League and National League divisions will be offered based on skill level. Season will include 12 regular season games plus a single elimination tournament. ASA Softball Rules will be used with modifications, and a strike mat to determine balls and strikes. Balls and fields are included. Each team will pay the umpire prior to starting the game. Mandatory Managers Meeting on Tuesday, April 25 at Novi Civic Center at 10am.

All players must submit their USTA rating, which can be determined through usta.com (professionally OR self-rated). Players must be 18 years old by May 15, 2017. A league banquet on Wednesday, September 6 (date pending) is included in the registration price. If you are interested in score keeping for your division, please make a note when registering. Division scorekeepers will be refunded their entry fee at the conclusion of the season. A meeting for scorekeepers will be held on Wednesday, May 10 at 6 pm at the Novi Civic Center.

Come work on your tan and while playing in the sand overlooking Walled Lake. All teams will be scheduled for 10 weeks of regular season games followed by tournament play. A mandatory manager’s meeting will be held at Lakeshore Park the week of May 23. FIVB Official Sand Volleyball Rules will be in effect. All games will be officiated. $10 official fee must be paid in cash directly by teams before the start of each match.

Whether you’ve never ridden a horse before or you’re an expert, Wildwind will get you moving with the horses. A one-hour English riding lesson is the equivalent of a 45-minute aerobic workout. Many people with joint problems, arthritis, and low muscle tone improve their overall health by therapeutic riding. Grooming and caring for your horse is a pleasure everyone enjoys. Extended mounting blocks are used to make it easy to get on and off your horse. Wildwind offers many clinics for seniors to get more involved. A certified therapeutic riding instructor will teach the class and make sure everyone is moving in the right direction. Join in the fun at the Novi Oaks Golf Center. Instructor Larry Wardo, a PGA Professional at the Novi Oaks Golf range, will provide individual attention to golfers of all skill levels. CUSTOMER APPRECIATION OPEN HOUSE

Every year, the Ice Arena hosts an open house in appreciation of all of our customers. This year’s event will be on Wednesday, August 30. Various divisions will be offered for team and individual registration leagues. The focus of these leagues is fun and even competition. There is no checking, early games times, updated standings, trained scorekeepers & officials, and awards for champions. Suburban Hockey Schools

Novi Youth Hockey Association

Novi Ice Arena is home to the Novi Youth Hockey Association. The NYHA is a non-profit, volunteer-led organization committed to cultivating and developing youths in the sport of ice hockey. Both house and travel teams are offered to support players ranging from ages 4-18. There are more than 500 players and coaches registered with the NYHA, making it one of the largest in Michigan and the USA. Over the years, NYHA teams have won state and district championships, along with numerous tournament wins. The hockey season runs from early August (travel)/late August (house) through March. The house teams (beginning with the Squirt division) and the travel teams participate within the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League (LCAHL), the nation’s largest amateur youth hockey league. The Mini-Mite and Mite house players compete against local teams. High School Hockey

Novi Ice Arena is the home of the Novi High School Wildcats and the Northville High School Mustangs. We are also the home for the Northville Prep and Girls teams. We host many high school hockey games and events each year.

SKATING CLUB OF NOVI

Established in 1998 with 25 members, the Skating Club of Novi is a volunteer organization that has been a member of the United States Figure Skating Association since 1999. Since then, the club has grown to over 150 members. The club is dedicated to the promotion of figure skating, and supports many activities at the Novi Ice Arena to further this goal. The Skating Club hosts the Annual Ice Show in the early spring that showcases the talents of our Learn to Skate students as well as our recreational and competitive figure skaters. Our coaching staff is for all levels of skaters, from beginner to competitive; individual freestyle and dance. On May 13-14, the Skating Club of Novi is hosting their annual ice show. This year’s theme is “Heroes and Villains.” Tickets are available in advance or at the door. Summer freestyle ice is available six days per week (Monday-Friday mornings and afternoons, and Saturday mornings). Please call the arena for times and levels.
